From Mike Lowry, Den Leader for Pack 290 in Manchester. Please share with your units!
If you met Griffin Wood, a Bear Scout in Pack 290, you would notice how quick he always is with a joke, a smile, and insight often wise beyond his years. You will also notice that he has difficulty with seizures, tremors, and the use of his right arm. Griffin has been diagnosed with Rasmuussen's Encephalitis, which affects the brain. The difficulties he is now facing will continue to worsen as it spreads and will eventually be fatal. Griffin is going to have to undergo brain surgery. The procedure is very risky as the two hemispheres of the brain will need to be separated. If the surgery is successful Griffin will have a 90% chance of being seizure free, as well as being able to forgo his restrictive diet and his medications. Due to the nature of the surgery Griffin will lose the use of his right hand, sight in his right eye, and have restricted use of his right leg. The surgery will ensure Griffin will be able to eat what all the other boys eat, participate in all the activities and adventures the other boys enjoy, and most of all Griffin will be able to join us next summer at Scout Camp and enjoy all the years to follow.
